American Motorcycle Girls "Cannonball Diary"
In the fall of 2010, Cris Sommer Simmons, “the American Motorcycle Girl”, rode her 1915 Harley-Davidson cross-country from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina to Santa Monica, California. In a field of 45 riders, she was one of two women to take on the 3,000 mile pre-1916 Motorcycle Cannonball Cross-Country Endurance Race. Her daily diary tells a special story of both human and mechanical endeavor. Riding cross-country on an antique motorcycle presents many challenges, mentally, physically and, of course, technologically.
